Hey Richard, thanks for the comment. I use "social media" to refer to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, Snapchat, and other platforms on which...

1. The average user posts under their own real name (these platforms have pseudonyms, of course, but most people use their real identity)

2. The average user creates loads of unprofessional content about their own lives

3. A feed serves you content from other users in your network

LinkedIn also counts as social media here, but I have never found LI to be addictive so I never felt the need to delete mine. It helps people in my professional network find me. This may be a similar case for Instagram and media companies. YMMV.

I don't consider Medium social media. The average user doesn't post articles. The content creators on Medium are a special class of user. I also don't consider YT social media for the same reason.

I don't think much of "self-discipline." I've written about this before. People say they need more "self-discipline" and then fall into the same holes over and over again. We don't say meth addicts need more self-discipline, we say they need to quit meth. "Self-discipline" is a IMO way of shaming people who have perfectly natural reactions to addictive behaviors and substances.
